Good fit and works wellWhen traveling in public transport over hours, or passing from hotel to hotel, this cable lock would be useful to prevent nimble fingers from stealing your laptop, but, worse, disappear with years of data. The cable is mean to loop around an immobile fixture (rail, plumbing, fixture) and the lock fits into a "security slot" found on most laptops. However, it will not hamper a determined thief with either bolt-cutters, or who have no problem with ripping the lock from the slot, or from the attachment point. So, it is a visual deterrent to opportunistic theft but not much else. If I am in a hotel, I would either lock the laptop in the room safe, or leave it in the hotel safe.As others have said, this is not going to stop anyone with a set of bolt cutters, but its going to make it difficult for anyone to whisk your laptop away when you get up from the table to get a drink of water. I really like the size and weight because it fits nicely in the pouch of charger cables and adapters I toss into my backpack. I feel better leaving my PC in my hotel room when there is no safe. This significantly improves your odds of not being a victim to a crime of opportunity. I like the combination rather than using a key because if you loose your key on a trip, you will be looking to buy a bolt cutter to get your own PC out of the Hotel. Yes, it does not have all 26 letters on each wheel, so you cannot spell every possible 4-letter word, but there are enough combinations that you can find some word that means something to you, but wont be too easy for a thief (like OPEN). All in all, I like this very much.I think it would be unlikely to make an inadvertent mistake when entering a code for the lock. 1st, you turn the slot 90', then turn the 4 dials to select the code word (two letters at a time per dial are displayed prior to being moved into the selection slot), after the code is correctly entered, turn back the slot the 90' to set your code. The slot cannot be accidentally moved as it must be depressed while turned using a paper clip, small screw driver, etc. Hold down a button to insert the lock into the computer's Kensington slot, release the button, then randomize the code letters. The cable is coiled and expands from 3" to 6'. Remove the lock from the computer by moving the code letters into place, hold down the button, and remove the lock. My lock is stable ~ there is no wiggle in either the letter dials or the clip that locks it into the computer. I purchased the lock so that I can use my laptop in an expo booth and not worry about someone walking off with the computer as I'm occupied dealing with a customer. I would not depend on this style of lock should I need to walk away from the computer as likely wire cutters will untie it from the cable. I placed my order on the a Thurs and received the item on Monday.Does what it's meant to do - provides a very visible theft deterrent. These things are not intended to stop the most determined and well-outfitted thieves, but are mainly designed to stop "smash and grab" type thefts. Very useful for things like hotels, trains or other situations where you don't really want to take your laptop with you everywhere but you can't otherwise easily secure it. No security is 100% perfect and a thief with a bolt cutter or just one who doesn't care about damaging what he's trying to steal could still make off with your laptop. But in a case like that, *nothing* is going to work short of a large safe bolted to the floor, and that's a different category of device. This lock is small enough to carry in a laptop bag, and it re-coils itself when you're done with it. Easy to change the combination to something only you know. (Just make it something you can remember.) I do wish the cable was a little longer but then it would start to get a little bulky, so the length it is is probably a reasonable compromise.Does NOT work on Dell laptops!!! DELL is a HORRIBLE company to begin with & yet again prove they are terrible. However, I have no say on what laptop my work provides so when I was given a Dell (I've owned macbooks for decades) I assumed this Kensington lock would be great.Changing the combo is super easy. It's durable & very well made, hence the 5 Stars. The red color is gorgeous! I cannot fault them for Dell's vanity. I am beyond upset that I cannot use this lock & have to return it. For $14 I wish it had fit the Dell work laptop! Now I'm forced to pay $40 for a hideous lock thanks to Dell being jerks!I thought it was coiled to show its length. It's coiled in product images because it is a coiled lock. It's too springy to use easily. When I anchor it to my desk, then detach it from the laptop it goes flying into the wall and then under my desk...The Kensington lock worked as it should. I was able to use it while on vacation. I was able to easily reset the code to something I would remember. I never had any issues connecting or disconnecting the lock from my macbook pro (spring 2011 version). It worked great, and the "pre coil" was nice to pack in luggage. I didn't give it a "5 star" because it didn't do anything *extra* I couldn't use it to lock up anything else... It just seems like that would be an easy feature to build into something like this.I would buy again if I were looking for a new lock. The one I'm complaining about I received as a gift for Christmas. Before I had a chance to start using it, I ordered a second one online from Amazon for my girlfriend (whose key I lost to her old one). It still sits, brand new, in it's packaging. The lock I received had broken by the second time I used it. The small, hollow and thin plastic tab you push to disengage/engage the locking mechanism broke in my bag at some point (in my travels, I assume), and now I found myself having to use a pen to lock and unlock my laptop. I sent the manufacturer's rep in Canada (Acco) an email with pictures asking for advice on where to send it, but they never replied. That was three weeks ago.Another concern I have is the way the cable is wound up for convenient storage. Have you ever taken a spring and fully extended it, only to have it recoil into a similar shape, but backwards at certain lengths (much harder to describe than I hoped)? The point is that in order to keep it tidy, I find myself spending a minute or two re-winding the spring-like cable so as to it will lie flat in my bag's (padded) small accessory pocket. On it's own, I'd likely not complain - but since I'm writing this review, there you go.The letters idea is great, but unless you struggle to remember 4 digits often, it's not worth the extra few bucks to create limited words - from what I can see, there is no other physical differences between the numbers and letters models. Just my wallet is a little thinner ($7, maybe?).Se siente y se ve como un candado seguro y de buen material que no se te va a romper o separar en partes, pues los materiales son de excelente calidad.Gute Sicherung für temporäres Arbeiten. Das Stahlseil könnte etwas länger sein. Negativ: Keine Rechnung verfügbar.Did not fit I returned itUn producto excelente y muy recomendable.
